Day in the Life of a Clinical Supervisor and a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst

Brian Summo

Brian Summo is a Clinical Supervisor and a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst at the Your Life ABA clinic in Roanoke, Virginia

Q: What is your day-to-day role at Your Life ABA?

I usually come in in the mornings and make sure everyone is settled, present, and adjusting the schedule as needed. I'll work with the technicians and their clients to make sure that they're running the programs appropriately and working through the objectives on the client's individualized service plan (ISP). As a board-certified behavior analyst (BCBA), I also work directly with clients. My role also includes data reporting, updating quarterlies, and working on authorizations for new clients.

Q: What are some of the different types of work you do with clients?

All clients have an ISP with written objectives, including goals for communication, social skills, activities of daily living and maladaptive behaviors. So, once we create the goals, we will work with the clients to run the trials through different ABA practices and track them through our software program. After that, I'll review the data to see how the kids are progressing or if they're not progressing and make any changes we need to the ISP or adding new interventions to help them learn a different way.

Q: What do you find most valuable about working at Your Life ABA?

The staff are very supportive, energetic, and feel passionate about working with the clients. Some days are tough, but we're always there to help each other out and step in when we need to. It’s great to see how the staff themselves grow and progress.

Q: Do you have any favorite moments or memories with a client you could share?

With one of my in-home clients, we do a lot of community outings to help him adjust to social and public settings. Being able to see him progress on his abilities to be out in public, playing with his peers and seeing his growth has been amazing.

Q: What is your favorite part about this job?

Socially, I thrive around other people. I enjoy just being out there and being visible and being someone that can be relied on to help whenever needed.
